Modelling can be one of the most rewarding, and lucrative, careers out there but it can also pose risks. We wanted to help you stay safe as a model, so we’ve put together these nine safety tips.
How to Stay Safe As a Model
Be cautious because the Internet is unregulated. Make sure you do your research before applying to any modelling agency, to ensure they’re legitimate.
Approach websites with no address or phone number with caution, and if possible get advice from someone who knows the industry before engaging with a new agency.
Having the right portfolio is critical to your success as a model. Simply having pictures isn’t enough – you need to have the right pictures – for your look, and for the agencies you’re applying to.
Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to say NO. If one agency wants to book you, it’s highly likely others will too, so never ignore that niggling feeling that something isn’t right.
Never pay an agency to be on their books. They make money from the commission
they get from getting you work, so they get paid when you do.
Never sign a contract or release form without reading and understanding its contents. Once you’ve signed a contract you’re tied into the terms it stipulates, so it’s important to understand exactly what you’re agreeing to.
Never travel overseas on the promise of work or part with money with anyone online. Models should never have to commit their own money before making money!
Always carry your passport, and make sure your passport is valid. Make sure to carry two forms of ID too, so you can lock your passport up in a safe place on arrival.
If you’re travelling abroad for a modelling job it’s important to visit the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for detailed travel and visa advice, so you know you’re completely prepared.
Make the most of your modelling career and follow these ten safety tips to stay safe as a model, wherever you are in your career.
