A specialized subset of glamour models is “fitness models”, which are between glamour and commercial print in the marketplace. The fitness model is also a ‘tweener: midway between a body builder and a classic glamour model. There are more male than female fitness models, although there is a market for both. There are several specialized magazines (such as Men’s Health) that routinely hire fitness models. They also can do some catalog and commercial advertising work.
Most fitness modeling is booked in Los Angeles or New York. There are a few agencies (or divisions of agencies) which specialize in fitness modeling in both cities, but much of the work is booked by non-agency models who self-promote to the magazines and sponsors, and who enter fitness competitions to come to the attention of media members.
